Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about psychiatric medication management at PsychMed Care — visit lengths, first-visit prescriptions, insurance and copays, labs, GeneSight testing, and supplements.
01 How long are appointments?
Your intake appointment is 60 minutes — a full hour for a comprehensive evaluation. Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes, every time. That time is deliberate: it is what careful medication management takes, and there are no five-minute refills here.
02 What happens at my first visit?
Your 60-minute intake is a comprehensive evaluation: your history, your health, your past medications and what they did, and what you want to be different. By the end you will have clear direction — a plan we decided together, which may include labs or GeneSight testing when they would change the decisions.
03 Will I leave my first visit with a prescription?
Sometimes. A prescription at the first visit happens sometimes, when it’s clearly the right call. Often, I’d rather use the first appointment to understand the full picture before starting or changing anything. We decide together.
04 Do follow-up visits include therapy?
Yes — every 30-minute follow-up includes brief focused, solution-focused therapy alongside the medication review. At PsychMed Care, that therapy lives inside your medication visits rather than as a separate service, and it is part of why follow-ups are a full 30 minutes.
05 Which conditions do you treat?
Depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD and trauma, insomnia and sleep problems, and substance use — in older adolescents (17 and up), adults, and seniors.
06 Do you accept insurance? What will I pay?
We are in network with Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, the Blue Cross Blue Shield family, Oscar, Oxford, Carelon, Providence, and more — plus Medicare in AZ, CA, CO, TX, and UT, and Medicaid in OR and WY. With insurance, the typical copay is $0–$40 for the majority of plans, and every plan is verified before your first visit, so you know your exact copay up front.
07 What does it cost without insurance?
Self-pay is straightforward: $350 for the 60-minute new patient evaluation and $250 for 30-minute follow-ups — all-inclusive, with no facility fees and no surprise balance bills.
08 Is care really 100% virtual?
Yes — appointments are by secure video telehealth, in 34 states + DC. One exception: if you are prescribed a controlled substance, most states require one in-person visit each year. We’ll plan that together, well in advance.
09 What is functional psychiatry?
It is medication management with a whole-person lens. Alongside precise prescribing, we look at the physical drivers of mental health — sleep, nutrition, movement, and physical health — and check targeted labs when they matter. “Stable” is the floor, not the finish. See the Approach page for more.
10 What labs or testing might I need?
When the picture calls for it, targeted labs through LabCorp check thyroid, B12, folate, vitamin D, iron, and metabolic and inflammatory markers that influence mental health. GeneSight cheek-swab testing can also show how your genes may affect your response to psychiatric medications, so medication choices involve less trial and error.
11 Do you recommend supplements?
Where the evidence supports them, yes. Supplements that are often part of a plan include magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), low-dose lithium orotate, and omega-3s. They are dispensed through Fullscript, reviewed at every visit like any other part of your treatment, and stopped if they aren’t helping.
12 Who do you work with?
Older adolescents (17 and up), adults, and seniors. PsychMed Care is an LGBTQIA+ affirming practice.
13 How do I get started?
Three steps: sign the treatment intention agreement and share your preferred days and times; complete the intake forms and consents online (about 10 minutes); then pick an open appointment slot. Start on the Book page or call 1 (800) 303-3221.
14 What if I’m in crisis?
Solutions Psychiatry is not an emergency service. If this is an emergency, call 911. If you are in a mental health crisis, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line — both free and available 24/7. See the Crisis page for more resources.
